Title: In a Jarwhimsical picture book about memories in a jar

Author: Deborah Marcero

Target: Preschool-Grade 2

What this book is about:

Llewellyn collected things in jars from his adventures.  One day he meets Evelyn and together they begin collecting memories of their time together.  Their jars fill their homes, until one day Evelyn learns she is moving away.  Llewellyn gets the idea to start sending jars back and forth and they are able to stay connected. One day when he is out collecting autumn leaves for Evelyn, he meets Max and Llewellyn just happens to have an extra jar.

Why I love this book:

  • First off the illustrations are just delightful.  I love how Deborah Marcero plays with the size of her artwork.  Some pictures are big expanses of memories and some are smaller to capture the feeling of what can fit in a jar.
  • I really appreciate her use of language.  How wonderful that the sunset is the “the color of tart cherry syrup.”

Who this book is for:

This book is lovely for all children.  I encourage you to have discussions about what you would put in your jar.  If you have a child whose friend is moving away, or they are leaving friends, it is also a wonderful choice.

Final thoughts:

Not often you see the name Llewellyn appear in a story.  Representation.
