Talking Heads Are Only the Beginning

Today I have a book where talking heads are only the beginning of this adventure.  Fovea Munson’s parents own a cadaver lab, and while she hates being referred to as Igor, when three severed heads start up a conversation with her, she suddenly finds herself in the uncomfortable position of doing their bidding.  What ensues is nothing short of quite funny.

Title: The Mortification of Fovea Munsontalking heads are only the beginning the mortification of fovea munson

Author: Mary Winn Heider

Target: Grades 5-8

Series: No

What this book is about:

Fovea’s parents own a cadaver lab, which has earned her the nickname Igor at school.  To make matters worse, she has to spend the summer as a receptionist in said lab!  But what starts as just a gross holiday activity, turns out to be quite disturbing when the three disembodied heads begin to start talking with Fovea.  The best part, they have a request, and if Fovea doesn’t manage to grant it, her parent’s beloved lab may be shut down by the authorities.  Thus begins an adventure, no one could have expected.

Why I love this book:

  • I read a lot and it isn’t that often that I get a completely new premise that isn’t just a clever rehash of something I have seen before.  I can safely say that this is one is new, although the themes of friendship, finding your own path and loss are always timely and relevant.
  • Fovea is a great main character.  She is a realist who takes things as they come and I was rooting for her the whole time.  From managing her parent’s embarrassing occupation to trying to resurrect a friendship that was lost, readers will be in Fovea’s corner.
  • There are plenty of heartwarming moments in this story, but the best part, there is also a little ick factor to keep things interesting.  I mean defrosting heads who ooze stuff, what kid can resist?

Who this book is for:

Great for kids who like realistic fiction with a kick.  The closest book I can think of that kids would also enjoy is The Secret of Ferrell Savage.

Final thoughts:

Always good to be reminded that we should really live life to the fullest.  Severed heads will do that for you.
