Story for Kids About Engineering Pranks

A story for kids about engineering pranks, how fun is that?  It’s like MIT hacks for the middle school set.  I love that each hack is about creating joy and not about hurting or embarrassing anyone.  Let the creativity begin!

Title: Nothing But Troublenothing but trouble story for kids about engineering pranks

Author: Jacqueline Davies

Target: Grades 4-7

Series: This is the first book in a planned series

What this book is about:

Maggie lives in the small town of Odawahaka where nothing really happens. Her middle school is about to get shut down and their 6th grade class will be the last one in the condemned building. However pranks designed to bring joy to the students seem to be occurring throughout the school. The new principal is not amused but the students are delighted. When a new girl in town figures out that Maggie is behind the pranks the two join forces to create some real change in their town.

Why I love this book:

  • First off this book showcases Maggie as a technically gifted girl who is also full of mischief. Great female character that both boys and girls will be able to relate to. I loved all the hacks, which are inspired by Maggie’s deceased father who went to MIT. These pranks are designed to bring joy and not embarrassment which make them extra fun. I couldn’t wait to see what the girls would do next.
  • I think there will be lots to explore with these character in subsequent books. There are hints of absentee parents and some alcoholism but they do not overwhelm the book, and serve to define the characters.
  • I love this author’s first series The Lemonade Wars, so I was anxious to see what she would come up with next. These girls are making the best kind of trouble.

Who this book is for:

Great book for kids who like an adventure and cool gadgets. If your kids enjoyed The Flinkwater Chronicles series, this one is an easy sell. It is also good for fans of The Terrible Two.

Final thoughts:

Can’t wait to see what hacks these girls come up with in the second book!
