So They Didn’t Get a Dog for Christmas

So they didn’t get a dog for Christmas.  I get it.  Dogs are a lot of work.  But there just may be a pet that you can say “Yes!” to.  Curious?  Well, do I have the book for you.

Don’t forget to follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or by email so that you don’t miss a single story that shows kids that learning about science may just lead to a pet of their very own.

Title: My Tiny Petso they didn't get a dog for Christmas my tiny pets

Author: Jessie Hartland

Target: Preschool-Grade 2

What this book is about:

Our main character lives in a house with lots of pets!  When her family downsizes to a tiny house, her parents forbid her from getting another animal.  She begs them and convinces them that this pet will be smaller than an eye of an ant.  It won’t need special food or walks and it doesn’t shed or bark.  Curious, her parents take a chance and give her the “Ok.”  The best part is as this family downsizes, their pet stays with them.  The Water Bear really is the perfect pet.

Why I love this book:

  • Sneaking some science into picture books is fabulous!  This is a fun way to introduce kids to microscopic animals in a pleasant way.  I mean who wouldn’t want the adorable water bear as a pet?  A lot better than dust mites that kind of freaked my daughter out back in the day.
  • Jessie Harland’s illustrations are very stylized and I love them.  There are always so many little details to find.  I also liked the extra information on the tardigrade in the back of the book.

Who this book is for:

Fun for all kids.  It introduces science in a non-threatening and creative way.  Great for kids who enjoyed Shark Lady.

Final thoughts:

Hopefully, your child will feel a little better about not getting that canine!
