Sad and Happy Combined for Kids

Today I have a book with elements of sad and happy combined for kids.  I know that my daughter loves books with a few tears but that also represent the joy and resilience of life and this story is right up her alley. I adored Stevie and while she certainly has her share of tough breaks, she is also able to find love and friendship in her new surroundings.

Title: Blooming at the Texas Sunrise MotelSad and happy combined for kids blooming at the texas sunrise motel

Author: Kimberly Willis Holt

Target: Grades 5-8

Series: No

What this book is about:

Stevie has a wonderful life with her mother and father on their farm, until one day tragedy strikes. Stevie is forced to go live with her grandfather, a man she has never met, at his motel in Texas. She struggles to feel connected to him, all the while finding friendship and acceptance with the hotel guests and employees. When an opportunity arrises to go live with her father’s family, will she move on, or try to maintain the family connections at the Sunrise Motel.

Why I love this book:

  • Well I loved this story. Stevie is charming and she appealed to me right from the start. The other characters in the motel and the town added color to the narrative without being too wacky or out there. Stevie’s grandfather is a hard nut, but he slowly starts to crack under the allure of Stevie.
  • The author doles out information about Stevie’s past in small increments which compelled me to read on the find out what had happened. Yup, I was sucked right in to finding out why her parents never spoke to their relatives and Kimberly Holt successfully kept me intrigued until the very end.
  • This book is an interesting size with smaller pages. I actually found the size intriguing and it made the story feel very manageable.

Who this book is for:

Great book for kids who like realistic fiction with a little sad thrown in for good measure. Kids who enjoyed Wish or Turtle in Paradise should like this offering.

Final thoughts:

This story inspired me to do a little planting in the garden so this may be a good choice if you have a child with a green thumb in the family!
