What this book is about:

Steffy’s mother was in a car accident and has been living at “the place” ever since. She and her sister go to visit every week. Their father couldn’t handle it and left them in the care of their Auntie Gina, a loving and nurturing guardian. However, their father decides to come back and try again which disrupts the safe routine to which they have become accustom. Steffy handles the stress by cooking. This is her happy place. When a cooking competition comes along, she is ready to prove her skills and try to bring her family back together.

Why I love this book:

  • Well Steffy is an absolutely appealing character and you are rooting for her from the start. She is honest and kind and felt like a real kid.
  • While there is sad in this book I appreciated that Steffy and her sister have caring adults in their life that are making sure their needs are met. Hey, no one can avoid the bad stuff, but it is important to get the support you need.
  • All the recipes are included so if you have an inspired reader you may be eating well after reading this book. The hand made Gnocchi was a little intimidating, but the crock pot Thanksgiving dinner may just save me in the years to come!

Who this book is for:

Great for kids who like realistic fiction and ones who enjoy cooking. If your kids liked The Truth About Twinkie Pie or The Thing About Leftovers then this one is a guaranteed hit.

Final thoughts:

This is another book for the kids who like a little sad in their stories.
