Realistic Early Chapter Book

I always love it when I find a realistic early chapter book that understands kids at this age.  This series has been out a few years but it just never made it on my radar screen.  I am so happy to have found it because the story is entertaining and kids will see themselves in the situations and characters.  This book is an absolutely lovely find.

Title: Pizza Is the Best Breakfast (And Other Lessons I’ve Learned)pizza is the best breakfast realistic early chapter book

Author: Allison Gutknecht

Target: Grades 1-4

Series: Yes

What this book is about:

Mandy is in second grade and she is so excited that her cousin Paige will be visiting for the week because Paige is fabulous. However, when her cousin gets there she isn’t the best buddy Mandy remembered. It seems Paige would rather spend time with Mandy’s brothers and sister, she calls Mandy by the wrong name and she is no longer a fan of Rainbow Sparkle. If the girls can’t find a way to get along this may turn out to the worst visit ever.

Why I love this book:

  • While this is the fourth book in the series, it was the first one I had read. I love Mandy’s voice because she feels like a kid who is eight. Her troubles, her worries, her insecurities and her sticker collection all feel like I am reading about a real life kid. Children will certainly hear themselves in this story.
  • I appreciate that the book addresses when cousins don’t always get along. My kids has some issues with one of their cousins one summer, and it isn’t always so easy dealing with family.
  • I like that the resolution felt authentic. The girls were each able to compromise and get along so the lesson was a nice reminder that your feelings can get hurt, but you can still be friends.

Who this book is for:

Great book for kids who like Clementine or Judy Moody. This book has 140 pages with limited illustrations, so kids have to be ready for a more significant early chapter book. This series does not have to be read in order.

Final thoughts:

I can safely say that pizza is no longer my best breakfast.
