Perfect Book for a Horse Lover

Today I have the perfect book for a horse lover.  American Pharaoh was the last horse to win the Triple Crown, and the author Shelley Mickle gives us an in-depth look at how his magical journey began.  While this is nonfiction, the story reads like a novel and readers will get caught up in the excitement of each race.

What this book is about:

This book is about the ascension of American Pharaoh from a promising thoroughbred to the winner of the Triple Crown. We follow American Pharaoh from foal to stud as well as learn about his owner, trainer, and jockey who all nurtured this horse as he fulfilled their dreams for what seemed like the unattainable prize.

Why I love this book:

  • Ok, I am not a horse lover, but even I was thoroughly entranced by the relationship of American Pharaoh with the humans in his life. The author does a wonderful job of making that bond between horse and person feel special as they work to understand each other.
  • Starting off we know that American Pharaoh wins the triple crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont) as well as the Breeders’ Cup but I was still completely caught up in the story and on the edge of my seat for each race. After learning so much about the horse the I wanted to know how he won the races and the challenges he faced in each one.
  • I really appreciated learning about all the individuals who surrounded American Pharaoh. Their journeys were equally as important in this horse attaining the success he enjoyed and their care and nurturing of American Pharaoh was lovely to see.

Who this book is for:

Great for any kids who love horses. If you like the author’s other book Barbaro, this one should be a sure hit.

Final thoughts:

This book almost made me want to ride. That’s a big step. Horses scare the bejeezus out of me.
