Patriotic and Inclusive Picture Book

What does it say when a patriotic and inclusive picture book, that is one of the most stunning of the year, is written by an immigrant from India and illustrated by a black artist?  It tells me that these individuals feel the American dream and that they know working together is the only way we will achieve a greater nation.  A clever, sparse text accompanied by gorgeous illustrations makes this book a standout.

Title: Blue Sky White Starspatriotic and inclusive picture book blue sky white stars

Author: Sarvinder Naberhaus

Target: Preschool – Grade 4

What this book is about:

This book celebrates our flag and the iconic symbols of America. Sarvinder Naberhaus and Kadir Nelson have taken the attributes of the flag and interpreted them as the images of our nation. Adjectives such as “Well Worn” serve to show us the material of the flag as well as the wrinkles on the face of Lincoln. “Woven Together” is the flag’s material as well as the individuals standing together arm in arm for civil rights. “All American” is a flag flying at a baseball game as well as a WW II vet eating Cracker Jacks on the porch with his grandson, listening to the game on the radio.

Why I love this book:

  • Kadir Nelson has illustrated the poetic verse of Sarvinder Naberhaus with beauty, inspiration and resilience. His images are, as always, diverse and breathtaking. He embraces our differences and encourages us to look at an America that moves forward together. Could there be a more poignant time for this message?
  • Beyond the obvious symbolism of this book, it is just a feast for the eyes. The clever use of sparse language and stunning illustrations will draw children into this story as they make the intended connections that are nuanced and intelligent.

Who this book is for:

Oh this is a wonderful book for all children. It is a way to talk about how our evolving country works best when we recognize our diversity and work together.

Final thoughts:

How inspired that a book so rich in what America means is written by an immigrant from India and illustrated by a black artist.
