Title: I Will Race You Through This Booknothing like a competition to spur a new reader

Author: Jonathan Fenske

Target: Preschool-Grade 1

What this book is about:

Bunny thinks she is the fastest reader and challenges anyone picking up this book to race her through the story.  She tries to take advantage of her opponent, but the reader catches her in the act. In the end this bunny just about wins the race but the reader prevails despite bunny’s antics.  However, loss doesn’t slow her down and she does find a new competitor to race.  She thinks the odds are in her favor because yup, it’s a snail.  But we’ve seen that story before!

Why I love this book:

  • I cannot lie, I am a huge fan of Jonathan Fenske.  He does a great job making early reader books funny in a clever way and absolutely engaging.  Not so easy to do with a limited vocabulary and plenty of word repetition.  His rhyming along with the charming graphics also helps early readers decipher the text.
  • The illustrations are bright and bold.  I read this one to my teenage daughter so I could try out the cadence and even she was giggling throughout.  She actually looked up from her phone to check out the vibrant pictures and got caught up in the story.  Let me repeat that, she looked up from her phone!

Who this book is for:

Great for all kids who like Fenske’s other work such as A Pig, a Fox and a Box.  Fans of the Ed and Fred series as well as Elephant and Piggie will enjoy this one.

Final thoughts:

I always wonder why Fenske does not have a more vocal following.  He is really talented and has even won awards for his books.
