New Graphic Novel Series

I always love it when a new graphic novel series comes out, and this one from the author of Zita Space Girl is an adventure filled new addition to the category.  Graphic novels have become a rich environment for storytelling that challenge both traditional readers as well as visual learners.  These are not your parents comic books!

Title: Mighty Jackmighty-jack new graphic novel series

Author: Ben Hatke

Target: Grades 3-7

Series: This is the first book in a planned series

What this book is about:

Jack is dreading summer since he must spend most of it taking care of his autistic sister who doesn’t speak. However, things get interesting when Jack trades the family car at the flea market for some seeds. In this reimagining of Jack and the Beanstalk, Jack and his sister plant the seeds and what grows is truly remarkable. These living organisms can give Jack powers and they can also attract dragons. But some of them are trying to attack Jack (think huge pink pumpkins that bite) and he must fight off the danger. With the help of a new friend and his sister, Jack is just starting to understand the power of these plants and his adventures are just beginning.

Why I love this book:

  • First off the illustrations by Ben Hatke are wonderful. The full color panels and crisp depictions of all the vegetation which comes alive is so well done. Kids can let their imaginations run wild in this story.
  • I liked that the story was not purely fantasy but also rooted in some real life problems for Jack and his family. I could absolutely feel for Jack and his dilemmas seemed real.
  • This is such a clever way to reimagine a classic fairytale. You can see the ties to original but at this point I have no idea which direction the author will take the story and that makes it exciting.

Who this book is for:

Great for fans of Zita Spacegirl or kids who enjoy the Amulet series. Lovely addition to the graphic novel category.

Final thoughts:

My favorite plants were the tiny onion babies. I am a sucker for cute.
