Nathan Hale’s Latest Adventure

Today I have Nathan Hale’s latest adventure.  What do you do next when you have an immensely popular graphic novel series based on great moments in history? Why create a post apocalyptic fantasy where the world is inhabited by aliens of course.  This is a departure for the author but a sucessful story into a new genre of graphic novel.

The big question for many parents will be if their kids enjoy this one as much as his other series.  The answer is: Maybe.  If your kids devour graphic novels, then this one is certainly a high quality offering.  If your kids love science fiction, then they will whip through it.  If your kids enjoy Nathan Hale’s style of humor, you can check that off the list in this new book.  However, if your kids are drawn to history and real events, this one is probably not going to be up their alley.  There are significant fantasy elements here that kids have to enjoy to appreciate this new offering.

Title: One Trick Ponyone trick pony nathan hale's latest adventure

Author: Nathan Hale

Target: Grades 3-7

Series: No

What this book is about:

Aliens are here and they are feasting on technology. Most citizens have reverted to pre-electrical days and bandits roam the landscape. Strata and her family live on a caravan which has rescued many of the digital files for safekeeping, but they are constantly on the move to hide from the Pipers, really scary alien blobs. When Strata discovers a mechanical pony, she is unwilling to part with her and as the Pipers draw near Strata must rely on her pony to save her civilization.

Why I love this book:

  • While this book is not exactly like Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales, it does retain the same humor and graphic similarities to those books. These are elements that I love so much in Nathan Hale’s books so I was immediately drawn to his new offering.
  • This is the ultimate science fiction/fantasy adventure. The tale that the author is able to weave in a mere 127 pages is pretty impressive. World annihilation, extremely scary aliens, feisty survivors and a pony, what more can I say?
  • Subtle messages about information content. Sometimes we are so busy “using” technology we aren’t really taking advantage of how what we can learn.

Who this book is for:

Great for kids who like graphic novels, especially science fiction. If your kids have read his earlier works such as Rapunzel’s Revenge, they will enjoy this one. If your kids liked Zita the Spacegirl or Amulet this is also a good choice.

Final thoughts:

An interesting departure from Hazardous Tales. Nathan Hale is always keeping it fresh.
