Title: WishWish lovely chapter book for kids

Author: Barbara O’Connor

Target: Grades 3-6

Series: No

What this book is about:

Charlie’s father is in prison and her mother can’t get out of bed to take care of her. As a result, she is sent to live with an Aunt and Uncle she barely knows in the middle of nowhere! When she finds a stray dog, she feels a kinship and he becomes part of her family. While her Aunt and Uncle are showering her with love and as she finds fast and loyal new friends, Charlie still longs for the family that will never be. That is until she realizes that what she wished for has been in front of her all along, just maybe not the way she expected.

Why I love this book:

  • I confess that Charlie’s fate was never really in doubt, but I grew to love her and was more interested in her journey. As the reader I saw how much love and kindness surrounded Charlie and her journey was really about realizing the gifts right in front of her.
  • Loved the characters in this book. From the chatty Aunt Bertha, to the resilient friend Howard, and even the strong sister Jackie, they each help Charlie in so many ways.
  • I think the author covered just about every way to make a wish in this book. From the well known four leaf clover to the lesser known birds on a wire, your kids will be experts on wish procurement.

Who this book is for:

Great for kids who like realistic fiction. Kids who liked Because of Winn Dixie or Turtle in Paradise will like this one.

Final thoughts:

The cover really threw me off. While it is appealing, it doesn’t really reflect the poverty or the harder life led by these characters.
