Kids on a Mission to Mars

Today I have a book about kids on a mission to Mars.  This one is fast paced with lots of twists and turns so hold on to your oxygen masks.  Outer space has never seen the likes of these six kids.

Title: The Countdown Conspiracykids on a mission to mars countdown conspiracy

Author: Katie Slivensky

Target: Grades 4-6

Series: No

What this book is about:

Miranda Regent has been selected, along with 5 other kids from around the world, to participate in the first manned mission to Mars. These are the best and brightest the world has to offer. But there is a worry that Miranda got selected because she is from the US and the selection process was rigged. There are several failed attacks aimed at her and during a training mission in the rocket they will be using to go to Mars, the systems shut them out and they actually lift off into outer space. Now, these kids not only have to figure out who is sabotaging them, but they also have to find a way home.

Why I love this book:

  • This one didn’t have a dull moment. I loved the twists and turns. Just when you start to feel settled into the story, well hold on to your hat.
  • The story certainly made science and space travel interesting for kids. There are plenty of details for the kid who is already a science buff, but even novices like me could follow along … most of the time. I also enjoy seeing girls as the science and coding experts. There was a nice expectation that any kid, girl or boy could be the best and brightest.
  • I appreciated that these kids, while geniuses, had all the same issues our kids have. They suffer from insecurities, they get crushes, they worry about friendship and they occasionally struggle through teamwork.

Who this book is for:

This book is great for any kid who likes space, science fiction or fast-paced action books. Kids who enjoyed Space Case or Jack and the Geniuses: At the Bottom of the World will enjoy this one.

Final thoughts:

I would have loved this book as a kid. My dream for a short time was to be an astronaut.
