Title: Class Dismissedclass dismissed imagine a class with no teacher

Author: Allan Woodrow

Target: Grade 3-7

Series: This is the first book in a planned series

What this book is about:

The class in room 507 is difficult. So difficult that their teacher Mrs. Bryce has had enough and quits midway through the day. The problem – her resignation never makes it to the appropriate administrators and now class 507 is without a teacher. Can these kids pull off the greatest scam in the history of scams and make it through the year without a teacher? Well, it’s not as easy as they thought and it requires a lot more work than they expected. Turns out they are learning a whole lot without a teacher and maybe, just maybe it would be nicer to have someone who knows what they are doing at the helm.

Why I love this book:

  • First off I really enjoy books that are told from multiple perspectives. This story alternates among the voices of several students and allows readers to get a more complete picture of what is going on. It also helps readers develop empathy for some of the more difficult students.
  • Ok, who hasn’t fantasized about a teacher going awol? I was impressed by how the students pulled off the deception without resorting to wild or unrealistic methods.
  • The characters are a little cliche and the writing is not the most subtle, but kids will still enjoy this caper as a straightforward journey into a fantasy scenario.

Who this book is for:

This book is great for kids who enjoy realistic funny fiction. If your child enjoyed Because of Mr. Terupt or A Whole New Ballgame this one will be an easy sell.

Final thoughts:

This story may very well give your kids a whole new respect for their teacher.
