Halloween Picture Book Classic

It really is hard for me to believe that the book I am profiling today has been around for 17 years.  In hindsight, I did read it to my now high school senior when he was little, so I don’t know why I am so surprised.  Time really is flying by,  This is one of those books that all my kids remember so fondly that I am now dubbing it a Halloween Picture Book Classic.

Don’t forget to follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or by email so that you don’t miss a single book where the wiener dog becomes a winner dog!  Funny stuff here.

Title: The Halo-Wienerhallo-wiener halloween picture book classic

Author: Dav Pilkey

Target: Preschool – Grade 3

What this book is about:

Oscar is a dachshund who gets teased for being a wiener dog. On Halloween he can’t wait to dress up as something scary, but his mom gets him a giant hot dog bun complete with mustard no less. Frankly, wearing the costume is embarrassing, but Oscar doesn’t want to disappoint his mom. Oscar gets teased, a lot, but when he finds his friends cowering in the lake afraid of a spooky monster, Oscar realizes it is the cats in disguise and exposes their ruse. His friends are so grateful they load him up with candy and declare him a hero sandwich!

Why I love this book:

  • So many little touches make this book a gem. Oscar’s last name is Myers which is carefully labeled on the mailbox, the teacher has a bone instead of an apple on his desk and the cats mock the dogs outside the window of the school house. So many fun finds to keep parents and kids entertained.
  • This book is a great read aloud. There are plenty of places to play up the funny and I dare kids not to giggle as you read it.

Who this book is for:

Great for all kids who like Halloween fun.

Final thoughts:

That Dav Pilkey knows kids!
