Girl Power Meets Horsepower

In this book, girl power meets horsepower.  This is about Princesses who like to compete and whose goal is to win the race.  No Billy Goats Gruff can stand in her way, no Knights can charge their way through.  Giving up is not an option.

Title: The Princess and the Pit Stopgirl power meets horsepower princess and the pit stop

Author: Tom Angleberger

Target: Preschool – Kindergarten

What this book is about:

The Princess is behind in the last lap of her epic car race.  The only way to win is to hit the gas and take no prisoners.  She has to smoke the Three Little Pigs, honk at the Golden Goose and clobber the Cobbler.  When she wins the monumental race she grabs the Prince because she has a dance contest to win!

Why I love this book:

  • Two words: Illustrations and Puns. The illustrations by Dan Santat are vibrant, exciting and full of motion.  Kids will be caught up in this car race because the pictures are so compelling.  Tom Angleberger delivers some giggle-worthy play on words and while they may not create a sense of urgency around the race, they will get some laughs.
  • Who doesn’t love seeing the Princess as the bad a**?  Strong girls rule the day, but boys will be just as energized to root for the Princess as girls.

Who this book is for:

Great for all kids who like to laugh and who like vehicles in their books.  My kids would race cars ad nauseam when they were young and this book would have been right up their alley.

Final thoughts:

I really want Dan Santat to illustrate my life.  He is just so good.
