Fast Paced Fantasy Adventure for Kids

Today I have a book that is a fast paced fantasy adventure for kids.  This is really not my genre, but for so many kids these books are the holy grail.  I love it when I find some that allow me to enjoy the premise and expand my reading choices, especially when kids are looking for so many new offerings!  So sit back and read about magic, alien beings, and adventures that will take you into new worlds.

Title: The Revenge of Magicfast paced fantasy adventure for kids

Author: James Riley

Target: Grades 5-8

Series: This is the first book in a planned series

What this book is about:

Ancient books containing magic spells were discovered at various places around the world 13 years ago, and only those born after the books were discovered are able to wield the magic.  There is a secret government-run school that has selected kids learning how to use this magic.  Fort is on a trip to DC with his dad when a giant creature bursts out of the ground.  His dad turns out to be the only casualty.  As a result, Fort is invited to the government school, but something seems off as he can hear the thoughts of an unknown girl who used to be in the program.  He knows the girl holds the key to the attack, but how does he find her?

Why I love this book:

  • It has been a while since I read a good fantasy novel and this one fit the bill.  Fort is a wonderfully likable character and his interaction with magic, creatures and past events will be a hit with young readers.  There is never a dull moment in this one.
  • I really liked the cast of kid characters surrounding Fort.  Between a boy who can see the future and two girls who are experts in their magical fields, Fort has a nice support system.  The adults were a little one dimensional, but I guess I can’t have it all.
  • This one is full of action from the first chapter.  For kids who don’t tolerate a dull moment, chases and battles are plentiful.

Who this book is for:

Great for fans of the author’s other series, Story Thieves and Half Upon a Time.  The one thing I will say is that some of the author’s humor is missing from this series that I really enjoyed in Half Upon a Time.  Fans of books like the Copernicus Legacy will really enjoy this one.

Final thoughts:

A good start to a new fantasy series.
