Engaging Chapter Book With a Spunky Heroine

Today I have a book that was well marketed at Book Expo America.   It is an engaging chapter book with a spunky heroine.  Gertie is a sentimental favorite, if you like that sort of thing!

Title: Gertie’s Leap to Greatnessgerties-leap-to-greatness engaging chapter book with a spunky heroine

Author: Kate Beasley

Target: Grades 4-6

Series: No

What this book is about:

Gertie is in fifth grade and she lives with her great aunt. Her father works on a oil rig so he is gone for weeks at a time and then gets extended stays back home. Her mother lives on her school bus route, so Gertie rides by her house, but her mother abandoned her long ago. When Gertie sees the “For Sale” sign in her mom’s front yard, she can’t get over the idea that by becoming the best fifth grader ever her mom will somehow stay and resume a relationship with her. But to become the best fifth grader requires study, grit, determination and the defeat of her nemesis, the seat steeler, Mary Sue Spivey.

Why I love this book:

  • Gertie is almost everything I wasn’t in fifth grade: determined, brave, confident and hurting. I think we all hurt a little in fifth grade. I was rooting for her during all the perceived injustices betrayed upon her. .
  • I try not to quote from books because it always looses something when taken out of context. But this one passage just got to me. “I’ve been mad at your mama ever since she left you,” Aunt Rae said. “So mad I could spit. I never did understand how a woman could leave her own baby because she didn’t feel like raising it. And I still don’t understand. But I realized it doesn’t matter why. I should love that woman to pieces, because she left you with me. Best thing that ever happened to me.” We all need an Aunt Rae.

Who this book is for:

Kids who like realistic fiction will be drawn to this story. If you child loves Raymie Nightingale or Because of Winn Dixie this book is a good choice.

Final thoughts:

I need to know what is in the water at this author’s home. Her sister is Cassie Beasley, the author of my favorite book from last year, Circus Mirandus. These women have some serious writing chops.
