Just in case you thought there couldn’t be another book to satisfy your child’s need for Greek mythology, well today you can rejoice!  Yes, there is an early reader series about Greek mythology which not only gives kids more information on the gods and goddesses but also tackles the beasts of Olympus.  Can everyone say Cretan bull!

Title: Beasts of Olympus: Beast Keeperbeasts-of-olympus early reader series about greek mythology

Author: Lucy Coats

Target: Grade 2-4

Series: Yes

What this book is about:

Demon (short for Pandemonius) is the son of Pan but lives with his mom, a mortal, in a small Greek village. One day Pan swoops in and takes Demon to Olympus to become the Beast Keeper for the Gods. Since Demon can speak to animals, he just might be a natural, however, Heracles is busy destroying the magical beasts. Demon not only has to care for them, he also, it seems, has to put them back together. This job may prove a little more difficult than he first imagined, and the Gods are not happy if their animals are not in one piece!

Why I love this book:

  • This story is a fun way to introduce kids to some of the Gods and mythical beasts that inhabit Greek mythology. The tone of the book is modern and lighthearted so kids will not feel overwhelmed with new information or names.
  • Yes, there are a few poop jokes, but all in all Demon is a nice kid who really cares about the animals in his care. Kids will like him and be rooting for him to get the job done.
  • The illustrations are fun and comical, in keeping with the story.

Who this book is for:

Good early chapter book for kids interested in Greek mythology. Kids who like Heroes in Training or Myth-O-Mania will like this one.

Final thoughts:

Myth-O-Mania is still my favorite series in the genre, but Beasts of Olympus is a fun addition for kids who want more.
