Comical Picture Book

A comical picture book absolutely makes my day.  Now I never envisioned getting my Lion Degree, but hey, I can roar and look fierce with the best of them, just ask my kids!

Title: Lion Lessonslion lessons comical picture book

Author: Jon Agee

Target: Preschool – Grade 2

What this book is about:

Our unnamed protagonist would like to take lion lessons and earn his Lion Diploma. Of course his teacher is an actual lion or as the author likes to call him “a pro.” Our protagonist is pretty unimpressive as he goes through his seven step curriculum which includes looking fierce and pouncing. However, his last lesson is looking out for his friends, and when he saves a kitty from a dog chasing him, the lion is definitely impressed. Diploma granted!

Why I love this book:

  • There is so much good stuff in this book. Between the lion yoga posses, the wry and deadpan humor of the lion teacher and the never ending reslilance of our protagonist this book is sure to please.
  • I have never been a huge fan of the artwork by Jon Agee simply because his style doesn’t really match my aesthetic. However, the simplicity and humor of this text paired with his illustrations are spot on. When it works, it really works.

Who this book is for:

Great for all kids. Of course your kids have to enjoy a good chuckle or this book will be wasted on them!

Final thoughts:

Favorite two page spread is when our young man pounces on a unsuspecting lady. Fans of dry humor will eat this stuff up.
