Can Business and Friendship Mix?

Today I have a book that answers the question “Can business and friendship mix?”  While I won’t give away the answer I will say that this book goes way beyond your neighborhood lemonade stand.  Let’s just say the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well on Poplar Lane!

Don’t forget to follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or by email so that you don’t miss a single story that brings back the idea of the pet rock.  Yup, I had one and yup I get how crazy that sounds.

Title: Payback on Poplar Lanecan business and friendship mix payback on poplar lane

Author: Margaret Mincks

Target: Grades 4-7

Series: Yes, this is the first book in the series

What this book is about:

Peter and Rachel live on the same cul-de-sac on Poplar Lane.  Peter fancies himself a businessman who has a new product to peddle every week.  Rachel feels invisible to the kids in the neighborhood.  She accepts an unpaid internship working for Peter so she can get out of her shell, but when he takes her help for granted, she starts her own business.  The competition between them heats up and both Rachel and Peter do things they never intended to do, with unforeseen consequences.

Why I love this book:

  • While readers will immediately sympathize with Rachel, they will also come to understand Peter and his motivations as well.  Nothing is as clear cut as it seems, which is kind of like life, isn’t it?
  • This book is told in alternating voices which I always think is great for kids.  Peter’s sections are interspersed with sage business advice while Rachel is a writer whose stories mimic life.  We get to read her latest piece of fiction throughout the book as she grapples with revenge and redemption.
  • The author keeps the story light with great ancillary characters.  Loved the Poplar Lane blogger and the magician just looking for an audience.  I wish my kids were as industrious in our neighborhood!

Who this book is for:

This book is great for kids who liked The Lemonade War or The Pet War.  Great for kids who like fun realistic fiction.

Final thoughts:

The road to success is filled with learning experiences!
