A New Book from the Author of Smile

It is always big news in our house when a new book from the author of Smile, Raina Telgemeier comes out.  When I got back with a copy from Book Expo America it was the first story that my daughter dug out of a box filled with many impressive titles.  While this book may be a little more somber than her previous books, it still talks to the reader in a way that feels honest and with insightful graphics that bring something more to the story.

Don’t forget to follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or by email so that you don’t miss any new books by an author that gets even some of the most reluctant readers absolutely engaged in her stories … and there are ghosts.  How cool is that?

Title: Ghostsghosts a new book from the author of smile

Author: Raina Telgemeier

Target: Grades 4-7

Series: No

What this books is about:

Cat has to move to a Northern California town because her sister has cystic fibrosis and will benefit from the cool air. She isn’t happy about leaving her friends and she is even more apprehensive when she finds out the new town has ghosts who visit on the Day of the Dead! But her sister who is struggling with health issues finds the ghosts comforting and Cat has to get over her fear to help her sister, and herself.

Why I love this book:

  • Raina always does a beautiful job of creating graphic novels that are compelling and heartfelt narratives. Cat is every tween girl who has a crush, worries about her family and doesn’t want to be embarrassed.
  • My daughter wouldn’t get up from the breakfast table until she had finished the whole book. What better recommendation is that?
  • I was a little skeptical about the ghost aspect at first, but it plays an integral part in the story. I also loved learning about a new cultural tradition, Day of the Dead. I especially understood how a child with a disease that will not improve can take comfort in traditions such as these. Death does not erase memories or love.

Who this book is for:

Great book for kids who love Raina’s other graphic novels and for reluctant readers who find the graphic novel format more inviting.

Final thoughts:

Another beautiful book by a talented story teller and artist.
