When the Teacher Is out to Get You

Every kid knows when the teacher is out to get you.  Charlie Bumpers is convinced that his teacher has it out for him based on a shoe throwing incident at the end of last year.  He is a marked man and nothing he does escapes her eagle eye.  Boy is he dreading fourth grade.

Title: Charlie Bumpers vs. the Teacher of the Yearcharlie bumpers when the teacher is out to get you

Author: Bill Harley

Target: Grades 2-4

Series: Yes

What this book is about:

Charlie is not very happy when he finds out Mrs. Burke will be his teacher for fourth grade. She expects him to be neat, to be organized and to not throw his shoes in school (there was an incident last year that we are NOT going to talk about!) Charlie feels like she is just waiting for him to make his next mistake …. can he survive?

Why I love this book:

  • This book is so readable. I know that sounds funny to say but it moves along at a good clip, the language is humorous and approachable and kids will just like Charlie. He is funny without being inappropriate and his family probably acts just like yours, only it’s more entertaining when it’s other people.
  • This book fills a great spot for kids who have moved up to chapter books but aren’t quite ready for the middle grade tome! At 138 pages and with illustrations scattered throughout it substantial without feeling overwhelming for new chapter book readers.
  • What kid hasn’t had a time when they thought their teacher was out to get them?

Who this book is for:

Great for new chapter book readers. A fun book for both boys and girls so don’t let the male protagonist dissuade you from giving this to your daughter. Also a delightful read aloud.

Final thoughts:

I was surprised by how much I liked this one!
