What Happens When You Close the Refrigerator Door?

What happens when you close the refrigerator door?  I love stories that take kids into those imaginary places, the dollhouse when a girl is out of the room, the Indian in the cupboard or even the leftover french toast when saved in the refrigerator for another day!  The possibilities are fabulous and our author takes full advantage of the fun and opportunities for humor.

Don’t forget to follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or by email so that you don’t miss a chance to see your food come to life.  I just wish those leftover brownies would take a hike so I am no longer tempted to nibble!

Title: The Case of the Stinky Stenchwhat happens when you close the refrigerator door stinky stench

Author: Josh Funk

Target: Preschool – Grade 2

Series: Yes, this is the second book in this series

What this book is about:

There is a stinky stench in the refrigerator and Inspector Croissant is on the case to find the offending odor. With the help of Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast they traverse the Salsa Ravine, row across Corn Chowder Lake and enter Onion Ring Cave only to find the offensive culprit is …. a long forgotten fruitcake! Will they toss the smelly item or try to rehabilitate him?

Why I love this book:

  • First off I love the premise of these books. The idea of a whole world in your refrigerator is so much fun. What really does happen when you close the door and the food has no prying eyes on them? Well Josh Funk and the delightful illustrator Brendan Kearney have imagined a pretty impressive world. I do wish the final panel had looked more like a refrigerator as it did in the first book, but I am getting nit picky.
  • I am a huge fan of the vocabulary used in this story. Nefarious, lumbered, dejected, delectable are wonderful words to expose to young minds in the context of the narrative. There are even some play on words that adults will appreciate when reading this story.

Who this book is for:

Great for kids who loved Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast. If your kids like to laugh this is a good choice. Of course this book could inspire a case of the munchies.

Final thoughts:

Will there be an investigation into the case of freezer burn next?
