Picture Book with a Comic Twist

I love a picture book with a comic twist.  Fenske first popped up on my radar when I was a Cybils judge and was reviewing Love Is in the Air.  However, it was A Pig, a Fox and a Box that sold me on his talent.  From there he just kept getting better.  He is a wonderful author for the picture book/early reader set and I will happily snap up anything he produces.

Title: Plankton is Pushypicture book with a comic twist plankton is pushy

Author: Jonathan Fenske

Target: Preschool – Grade 1

What this book is about:

Plankton is just a little annoyed. When he waves hello to Mister Mussel, he is summarily ignored. Plankton starts by trying to coach Mr. Mussel politely on how to respond, he then berates him for being rude, and finally his yelling turns to begging as he implores Mr. Mussel to say hello back. However when Mr. Mussel does decide to open his mouth, it is simply to have Plankton as tasty snack, and then he does utter his first word “Delicioso!”

Why I love this book:

  • I love a book with a good comic twist at the end and plenty of sarcasm in between. This book fits the bill. Fenske doesn’t try to do too much. He simply imbues Plankton with plenty of attitude and Mr. Mussel is the perfect straight man in this comedy routine. Both parents and kids alike will appreciate the humor.
  • Let’s talk illustrations. Fenske does a wonderful job of creating bold and nuanced characters with his artwork. Pages are simple but convey so much. I love that his style is unique and identifies his books immediately.

Who this book is for:

Great for kids who enjoy a good laugh. If you liked the author’s other picture book, Barnacle is Bored, this one is a slam dunk.

Final thoughts:

Starfish is Sedate, Corral is Crabby … what will the next iteration be? Can’t wait to find out!
