Mystery Wrapped in Magic

The book I am sharing today is a mystery wrapped in magic.  This one sucked me in right away and I was completely drawn into the puzzle of Emily’s disappearance.  The main character Raine is dealing with bullies and issues of growing up, but this book is also steeped in adventure and edge of your seat moments so it isn’t simply a look at a teen’s angst but also the culmination of a mystery.  It was my can’t put down read for the summer.

Title: The Disappearance of Emily H.Disappearance of emily h mystery wrapped in magic

Author: Barrie Summy

Target: Grade 5-8

Series: No

What this book is about:

Raine and her mother have just moved to the town of Yielding where Raine will be starting 7th grade. Unbeknownst to them, they have moved into the house of a girl who disappeared several months ago and has never been found. Raine is dealing with new friends, a set of bullies and managing her gift of discovering sparkles. Sparkles are memories on people or objects that Raine can pick up and read. As she manages the mean girls, she inadvertently gets pulled into the mystery of Emily H., the girl who vanished and what happened to her on the fateful night of her disappearance.

Why I love this book:

  • I got pulled into this one immediately. This is a great mystery and the suspense just keeps building. Raine is absolutely appealing and I was rooting for her to save the day from page one.
  • The two plot twists I had to overcome where the sparkles and lack of parent involvement. The magic aspect was better than I expected, but I actually think the book could have worked well without it. Also the plot hinges on kids not telling parents what is going on, which I always find a bit unrealistic. The author does make an effort to explain it and since the story was so good, I will forgive.
  • Liked a little bit of romance but it was never over the top which was appreciated.

Who this book is for:

This is a great book for kids who like mysteries or page turners! If your kids liked Goodbye Stranger, The Maypop Kidnapping or books by Chris Grabenstein then this will be a good fit.

Final thoughts:

I read it in one sitting and handed it straight to my daughter.
