My Favorite Early Chapter Book Series Is Back

My favorite early chapter book series is back!  Oh, happy day.  Lulu is the perfect selfish little brat who will charm the pants off readers.  She always comes around in the end in her own unique style, leaving the lesson brought home but her personality intact. I can think of no other early chapter book series quite as fun and full of giggles which will leave your kids begging for more.  See, I really do love this one.

Title: Lulu Is Getting a Sistermy favorite early chapter book series is back lulu is getting a sister

Author: Judith Viorst

Target: Grades 1-2

Series: Yes

What this book is about:

Lulu is at it again in a new adventure.  This time she is informed she is getting a baby sister and they are sending her to Camp Sisterhood, a sister training camp.  At camp, each Sister in Training (SIT) gets a temporary sibling which will help them adjust to their new role.  Now if you know Lulu, you know she has no desire for a new anything that will change her status at home.  I mean weren’t her parents always telling her that nothing on earth brought them as much joy as her?  She thought she had this girl in the family thing covered!

Why I love this book:

  • Lulu is my favorite.  No denying that.  She says and feels everything kids aren’t allowed to say or feel.  She is selfish, self-centered and thinks she is all that.  Of course, in the end, she comes around, but not at the expense of her own unique personality which makes her utterly authentic.  That’s why you can’t help but love her.
  • This book is full of funny stuff.  From the camp director aptly referred to as “call me Debbie” to the twins Mitzi and Fritzi who are both rude and condescending winners, Lulu has met her match.  The narrator also is full of zingers guaranteed to make children giggle.
  • These books have grown in complexity and length with each new addition.  I love learning more about Lulu and enjoy the story growing with its readers.

Who this book is for:

Great for any fan of the other Lulu books.  The third book in the series is still my all-time favorite, but this new addition fits seamlessly into the series.  This is a great book to read aloud, but only if you want your kids to laugh.  If you expect your children to sit quietly and seriously during story time/bedtime, do not pull out this book!

Final thoughts:

I can’t wait to see the antics of Lulu and her new sibling.
