Middle School Crush

Today I have a book about a middle school crush.  This third book in the Berrybrook Middle School series focuses on a large but gentle giant who has been quite centered until he meets his biggest foe, a cute girl from the drama department!  Suddenly he isn’t quite sure what to do!

Don’t forget to follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or by email so that you don’t miss a single story where a graphic novel perfectly captures the awkwardness, bravery, and crushes that make up middle school.

Title: Crushmiddle school crush

Author: Svetlana Chmakova

Target: Grades 5-8

Series: Kind of.  The author has written three graphic novels about life in middle school including Awkward and Brave.  While the books do tie together, the stories are independent of each other and do not have to be read in any order.

What this book is about:

Jorge is a gentle giant.  As an athlete who is large in stature, no one bothers him.  He is part of a reliable friendship trio and helps out kids who are being bullied.  But when one of his friends wants to hang with the “popular” crowd, who seem to be less than upstanding, Jorge just isn’t interested in their antics.  He also develops a crush and suddenly doesn’t feel as confident and centered as he usually does.  Life in middle school is never without its complications!

Why I love this book:

  • Svetlana Chmakova has a knack for creating realistic characters and situations that are actually completely believable in middle school classrooms.  Spot on as always and kids really appreciate that.
  • Jorge felt like a character we don’t often see as the lead in a book.  This quiet, sensitive athlete who is too big for his own good and who is actually well cemented in his own values is a rarity. I also liked the fact that in this book there was a set of mean boys, but the girls were incredibly supportive of one another.
  • The artwork is great as is the writing.  Creating a graphic novel of this quality is a labor of love for an author/illustrator and Svetlana nails it.

Who this book is for:

Great for fans of Svetlana’s other books, Awkward and Brave.  This book will be well loved by boys and girls.  Wonderful pick for kids looking for a good graphic novel.

Final thoughts:

Are you a Jorge or a James?  That is the question you will be asking the boys in your life after reading this book.  Let’s hope most folks pick Jorge!
