Middle Grade Book from the Author of Dumplin’

Today I have the first middle-grade book from the author of Dumplin’.  I loved the Netflix movie of Dumplin’ so I was thrilled to see what Julie Murphy wrote for the younger set.  I was not disappointed!

Title: Dear Sweet Peamiddle grade book from the author of Dumplin' Dear Sweet Pea

Author: Julie Murphy

Target: Grades 3-6

Series: No

What this book is about:

Sweet Pea is in seventh grade.  Her parents have just divorced and in an effort to minimize the disruptions for her, they now both live on the same street with one house between them.  Sweet Pea’s room is almost identical in both houses!  When their neighbor Miss Flora, the local advice columnist, leaves for a trip she asks Sweet Pea to take care of her house and forward her letters.  However, Sweet Pea discovers that maybe she can help answer a few of those letters that hit particularly close to home.  This gets her into more than a little trouble, but it is when she discovers a lot about herself.

Why I love this book:

  • First off Sweet Pea is not stick thin, and this book really promotes positive body images.  Her parents love and support Sweet Pea no matter what her size.  Her friends are not overly concerned about her weight either.  While this is is only peripheral to the main story, given all the pressure out there for girls to be petite, I loved this book where body size is not a source of shame.
  • I liked Sweet Pea quite a bit.  She is a good kid who is going through all the stuff middle school kids have to handle.  She has a friend who has ditched her, a crush, an assignment she just can’t seem to start and parents she doesn’t want to disappoint.
  • The breakout star of the book is, of course, Miss Flora.  Every good book needs an eccentric, but always on point, character and Miss Flora is that in spades.

Who this book is for:

Great for fans of realistic fiction.  Reminded me a bit of Vilonia Beebe Takes Charge, so if your child liked that one, this one should be a hit.  Good fit for kids managing through a divorce.

Final thoughts:

I loved Dumplin’, yes the Netflix movie, I never read the book.  Feels wrong that I admitted that.  Anyway, Dear Sweat Pea was just as satisfying for the younger set.
