Title: Elon Musk and the Quest For a Fantastic FutureLook into the world of Elon Musk

Author: Ashlee Vance

Target: Grades 6-8

Series: No

What this book is about:

This book follows the life and career of Elon Musk. It is based on the best selling adult book, where the author had exclusive access to Musk, his family and business associates. It starts with Musk’s upbringing in South Africa, and his early years building Zip2 and X.com, which eventually becomes Paypal. The book spends the majority of its time on the Musk’s most famous companies SpaceX and Tesla where Musk gambled his entire fortune and revolutionized two industries.

Why I love this book:

  • First off I must confess that I live in the heart of Silicon Valley. The headquarters for Tesla is just a few miles from my home so this company and its challenges do not feel foreign to me or my kids. SpaceX is a company over which I have a vague knowledge, so this book proved extremely enlightening. I hadn’t realized the fact that Musk was really tackling the status quo on two fronts and how if almost all fell apart … several times.
  • It is fascinating to get a peek at what it takes to break molds in two industries where no new entrants had succeeded in over 50 years. How a small upstart could change everything is absolutely illuminating.
  • Musk is not as well known as Jobs or Gates but really his story is so compelling and his accomplishments are so amazing that it is just a matter of time.

Who this book is for:

Great for kids who want to learn about a Silicon Valley entrepreneur who is shaking up the landscape. Amazon positioned this book for grades 3-6, but it is really more a middle school/high school book. The business concepts would fly over the head of an 8-10-year-old If I have a criticism about this book it is that the business elements could have been better explained to kids.

Final thoughts:

I finished this book on the same day that SpaceX launched its Heavy rocket. Fun timing!  I do wish there had been more photographs they couldn’t have been that hard to obtain!
