Kids Really Will Use Math Throughout Their Lives

Today I have a book that shows readers that kids really will use math throughout their lives.  At the center of this story is a girl who is not so fond of math, and while she may never become a mathematician, she does realize that sometimes you have to find the benefits in the subjects you learn, even if they aren’t your favorite.

Don’t forget to follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and by email so that you don’t miss a single story where a dead possum plays an integral part in a story about the joy of math.  Now that some clever writing!

Title: Dead Possums are Fair Gamedead possums kids really will use math throughout their lives

Author: Taryn Sounders

Target: Grades 4-6

Series: No

What this book is about:

Ella is an only child who likes things done a certain way. The one thing she would like to avoid forever is math. But as fifth grade ends, her school is scheduled to hold a Math Fair. Their group project is worth two math grades and Ella sees a summer math tutor in her future if she doesn’t nail this project. Surprisingly, the dead possum she finds on school grounds provides the inspiration for their project, but two unexpected roommates who arrive at her house could derail all her hard work!

Why I love this book:

  • I loved the way the book approached math in a positive and fun way. It isn’t preaching to kids to love math, but the story does show Ella and the reader how math plays an important part in life and sometimes you just have to find the good in it.
  • I really enjoyed Ella. She is flawed and trying to figure it all out, but she has a true and humorous voice that kids will be drawn to.
  • The author manages to fit a dead possum who catches the uncatchable kick ball into the story. Now that is some good writing.

Who this book is for:

Great for kids who are both challenged by math and kids who love math. Nice realistic fiction and although the main character is a girl, both boys and girls will enjoy this story.

Final thoughts:

The cover of this book needs some work. This is the perfect story for my daughter but because of the cover she left it sitting for quite some time untouched.
