Kid Series is a Slam Dunk

Maybe it’s the immanent Olympics games or the fact that my daughter’s soccer team is starting practice again after the summer off, but I have had sports on the mind.  That means it’s time to share some of my favorite sport books, and today basketball is front and center!

Don’t forget to Follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or by email so that you don’t miss any of the stories that get your sports obsessed kids to sit down and pick up a book once in a while!

Title: STAT: Home CourtSTAT basketball

Author: Amare Stoudemire

Target: Grades 3-6

Series: Yes

What this book is about:

Amare loves skateboarding, baseball, and basketball. Basketball is especially fun with his friends and they have played on the same local court for years. But suddenly some older boys are taking over their court and these new kids don’t like to share or play fair. Amare has to decide how important basketball is for him and if he and his friends can “win” their court back. It takes teamwork, some courage and hard work, but the boys are up for the challenge.

Why I love this book:

  • I was surprised at how caught up I got in this story. Even though I knew (spoiler) Amare would come out victorious in the end, I was still looking forward to seeing how they managed the game.
  • Loved that this book had a main character of color. This story is about a group of friends dealing with bullies and the fact that they are racially diverse is just an added bonus! Nice change that the sidekick friend is white.
  • I enjoy finding more sports books for the basketball obsessed readers. Can there really ever be enough?

Who this book is for:

Great for boys who love sports, especially basketball. Kids who like realistic fiction will also enjoy this series.

Final thoughts:

I have to confess that I am not that knowledgeable of NBA player Amare Stoudemire, but he describes these books as biographical. I am usually skeptical of athletes who write books, but am impressed with this series.
