Is That Actually a Job?

Today I have a book that will have kids saying “Is that actually a job?”  We have all read the books where kids can be a Doctor, a Lawyer or a Construction Worker.  But how about Dinosaur Duster or a Cow Massager?  Not jobs kids typically consider.  This book will open kids’ eyes to all the unusual passions they can pursue and remind parents that the jobs of tomorrow may look quite different than those of today.

Don’t forget to follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or by email so that you don’t miss a single story that may have your child considering Sloth Nanny alongside some more conventional choices for their future.  Hey, isn’t it about trying and seeing what you like best?

Title: Incredible Jobs You’ve (Probably) Never Heard Ofis that actually a job

Author: Natalie Labarre

Target: Kindergarten-Grade 3

What this book is about:

This book shares some of the less conventional jobs out there.  Most are quite fun and funny from a Tortoise Walker to a Professional Sleeper.  However, the book deftly makes the point that there are so many more possibilities than the conventional Pilot or Plumber and it does so in a way that is silly and full of plenty of giggles.

Why I love this book:

  • I love opening up imaginations to all the possibilities kids can become.  We live in a time when so many new careers are being chartered and it is great to let kids know they don’t have to fit into the box of typical job choices.  There is also a nice international assortment of jobs that will provide a window into other cultures.
  • The illustrations, also by Natalie Labarre, are wonderful.  They are colorful, filled with delightful details and will pull kids right into the book.

Who this book is for:

I can’t think of a kid who wouldn’t enjoy this one.  However, I do think if you have a child with learning differences, this book is a wonderful choice.  It shows them that they don’t have to fit into traditional roles and can carve out an interesting path for themselves.  This one is just fun, and kids will love all the blurbs of different and audacious jobs.

Final thoughts:

My kids would have poured through this one when they were younger with astonishment and some disbelief.  I mean a Cow Massager does seem a bit fanciful in the scheme of things.
