Hilarious Picture Book for Kids

Today I have a hilarious picture book for kids.  This “wordless” picture book is indeed filled with words, much to chagrin of Rupert the Mouse who is producing said book.  All he wants is a little quiet, along with some visually stimulating illustrations, but instead he gets Nibbs and Thistle.  These two well meaning mice are full of great ideas for this story and they aren’t afraid to tell you about them!

Don’t forget to follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or by email so that you don’t miss a single story where the mice are about as likely as your kids to be quiet when asked!

Title: Be Quiet!Be Quiet hilarious picture book for kids

Author: Ryan T. Higgins

Target: Preschool – Grade 2

What this book is about:

Rupert the mouse is making a book – a wordless picture book. The problem is that he can’t seem to keep others from speaking. When his friends Nibbs and Thistle come by they try to help with a myriad of suggestions and all their talking sends Rupert into a tizzy. They offer up bears, kittens and cucumbers. They even come up with superhero Captain Quiet, a vocabulary vigilante! Rupert has had enough and goes into a verbal tirade only to be reminded by Nibbs and Thistle that he really should quiet down, I mean this book is wordless after all!

Why I love this book:

  • First off the premise is laugh out loud funny and the clever humor is non stop. Nibbs and Thistle’s ridiculous suggestions keep the jokes flowing and play well off of Rupert’’s exasperation.
  • Some nice vocabulary is snuck into the story with your kids being none the wiser. The book tackles onomatopoeia, the concept of visually stimulating and even introduces a little Vincent van Gogh, or Vincent van Mouse as the case may be.
  • Great illustrations that play well with the silliness of the story. Clever sight gags are cleverly drawn to up the ante on this wonderful story.

Who this book is for:

I have skewed it up to second grade because the humor in this book will also really appeal to an older audience. This is a book that will appeal to both an older and younger sibling at the same time which is always a win in my book.

Final thoughts:

This may be the first time parents are thrilled that characters don’t follow the directions to “Be Quiet!”
