Fun Fast Paced Short Stories

Today I have a book that is filled with fun fast paced stories!  For kids who are starting chapter books, the Teeny Weenies is a wonderful introduction to the silly, creepy adventures that books can provide.  My kids still remember these fondly and devoured all the Weenie books.  I am just so excited that David Lubar decided to bring his stories to younger readers who are just getting into chapter books.

Don’t forget to follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or by email so that you don’t miss a single book of stories that kids will just gobble up.

Title: Teeny Weenies: Freestyle Frenzy and Other Storiesfun fast paced short stories teeny weenies

Author: David Lubar

Target: Grades 1-4

Series: Yes

What this book is about:

This book is a set of twelve short stories about the Teeny Weenies.  From the boy who litters and learns his lesson from Mother Earth (literally) to the kid who shows his parents he has actually learned something from playing video games, these stories will delight.  They go from a little gruesome to downright silly and darn if they aren’t totally clever.

Why I love this book:

  • My kids devoured the books about the Weenies when they were younger, and I am surprised to say I never read one.  I was under the impression the humor was way too juvenile for my taste, despite liking the occasional well placed fart joke.  However, these stories surprised me.  They are actually well crafted and quite sharp.  I can understand why I have a stack of well worn Weenie books in my garage that my kids decided to save.
  • Sometimes readers are not too keen on a set of short stories, but these felt cohesive even though there wasn’t a larger narrative holding them together.  I was pleasantly surprised that I wanted to read each one and while some are stronger than others, they all absolutely amused me. I was constantly looking for the shrewd twist the author would use to bring the story full circle that will absolutely hook kids.

Who this book is for:

This book is great for readers who like fun and little creepy.  It is a great book for reluctant readers because each chapter is a complete story arc that will keep them engaged.  The Teeny Weenies are meant for early chapter book readers while the regular Weenies are for kids who are well into chapter books.  These stories would make a great read-aloud as well.

Final thoughts:

I asked my kids how much they remembered about the Weenies and they started reminiscing about the stories.  Can’t give books a better recommendation than that.
