Don’t Mess With Little Red

The message of today’s book is clearly don’t mess with Little Red.  In this reinvention of a classic fairytale, Little Red Riding Hood is no shrinking violet and when the wolf gobbles down grandma, Little Red will not sit idly by.  Just a little female empowerment to start the day off right.

Title: Little Redlittle red don't mess with little red

Author: Bethan Woolvin

Target: Kindergarten – Grade 3

What this book is about:

An update of a classic story, Little Red Ridding Hood is on her way to see grandma. She encounters the wolf, and while this might scare some girls, it doesn’t scare this girl. She hatches a plan and takes down that wolf because nothing stops Little Red.

Why I love this book:

  • The illustrations are absolutely striking. The red, black and white color palate is hard to ignore and it makes this book so visually interesting.
  • I love that Little Red never resorts to being scared but makes a plan and gets the job done. There is enough sly humor to make this book endearing and give both kids and adults a few giggles.

Who this book is for:

This book is not for the faint of heart. Grandma does get eaten and the wolf is planning to have Little Red for dinner, so kids reading this can’t be too sensitive. However, girls who like to be victorious will enjoy this story.

Final thoughts:

I love the compelling graphics and the girl power in this story! The book has an international feel and I am not surprised that the author/illustrator is from the UK.
