Delightful Early Reader

Today I have the fourth book in a delightful early reader series, The Princess in Black.  It turns out that princesses who battle monsters sometimes need a vacation.  The double doozy fling, used to tame the beasts from Monster Land, can be exhausting!

Don’t forget to follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or by email so that you don’t miss a dainty princess who can best the most ferocious beast in battle!  Mic drop!

Authors: Shannon Hale & Dean Hale

Target: Kindergarten – Grade 2

Series: Yes

What this book is about:

In this fourth installment in the series, the Princess in Black is exhausted from battling the goat eating monsters.  When the Goat Avenger turns up to help her, he suggests she take a vacation while he watches over the fields.  Thrilled, Princess Magnolia (aka the Princess in Black) goes off to the beach were she encounters the people eating Sea Monster.  She turns into her alter ego, and back to work she goes battling this new nuisance.

Why I love this book:

  • This whole series is so well done.  I love it that Princess Magnolia, a tiara loving, frill seeking royal is also the Princess in Black who defends her subjects from mean monsters.  Girls can love pink, lace and bows and still kick butt when the situation demands it!
  • The illustrations by LuUyen Pham are absolutely adorable and appealing.  They complement the story so well.

Who this book is for:

Great for kids starting early chapter books.  Plenty of illustrations on almost every page and large type make this a book kids will find success reading.

Final thoughts:

I just wish this delightful early reader series had been around when my daughter was younger.
