Delicious Fantasy and Adventure Story

Today I have a delicious fantasy and adventure story for kids.  However, this book should come with a warning.  A serious chocolate craving will ensue after reading.  You have been warned.

Don’t forget to follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or by email so that you don’t miss a single story where chocolate is a very lucrative and noble passion.

Title: The Dragon with a Chocolate Heartdelicious fantasy and adventure story dragon with a chocolate heart

Author: Stephanie Burgis

Target: Grades 4-6

Series: No

What this book is about:

Aventurine is a dragon who is not old enough yet to go outside her home and experience life. One day her frustration boils over and she leaves her cave, prepared to show her family she is ready for anything. But she easily gets tricked into drinking a magical hot chocolate that turns her into a human girl. While she has found her passion – chocolate – she has no desire to be a puny, insignificant human. She struggles to find an apprenticeship where she can pursue her love of chocolate and forget her lost form and family.

Why I love this book:

  • First off how can you resist a fantasy novel that features the delicate, delicious, sumptuous and smooth rich cocoa that we all love. After I finished this book all I wanted to do was go out for some velvety delectable chocolate tarts. This interesting take on chocolate was a fresh new twist on a fantasy genre.
  • I loved all the characters. Aventurine is always dragon at heart, no matter her form. She is fierce and determined in the face of adversity. Her friend Silke is the girl with street smarts who admires Aventurine’s shrewdness. The chocolate maker Marina takes no prisoners in her quest for the perfect chocolate creation. They all create a wonderful place for the reader to inhabit for a time.
  • Plenty of action in this one will keep readers on their toes. I almost couldn’t keep reading when Aventurine almost loses the chocolate shop, which shows how invested I had become in the story.

Who this book is for:

Great book for kids who like fantasy and adventure. Of course, if you have a child who loves chocolate, this one will not disappoint. It reminded me loosely of The Luck Uglies, another fantasy book I adored. Fans of Shannon Hale will like this one.

Final thoughts:

This book would not have made it on to my radar were it not for the Cybils, the internet book awards. They have fabulous book selections for kids and are a great resource for finding new books.
