Charming Book About Hair and Bonding

Today I have a charming book about hair and bonding.  This book is based on a short animated film which is shown at the beginning of the Angry Birds 2 movie.  See a clip below at the end of the post!

Don’t forget to follow One Great Book on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or by email so that you won’t miss a single story that challenges a dad’s capacity to style hair.  Hey, it’s not easy out there.

Title: Hair Lovecharming book about hair and bonding hair love

Author: Matthew A. Cherry

Target: Preschool-Grade 2

What this book is about:

Zuri is getting ready for a big day and she needs her hair just right.  Her dad is enlisted to give her just the right style, but none of his solutions are quite right.  However, when they put their minds together and get just the right tutorial on YouTube, Zuri’s hair turns out perfect.  Just in time for a special homecoming!

Why I love this book:

  • First off this story deals with the challenges of black hair.  I have absolutely no experience with styling these kinds of locks, but the issues are real and I have learned a thing or two.  Suffice it to say that it is not the same as what I have to do, and I have a whole new respect for the beautiful styles sported by black women and girls.
  • I love that this book shows the bond between father and daughter. I appreciate showing dads in such tender and nurturing roles with their daughters.
  • The illustrations by Vashti Harrison are vibrant and engaging.  This is a successful book adaptation of the short film.

Who this book is for:

This book is for any girl who can’t get her hair just right.  This book is for any black girl who doesn’t feel she is represented in books.

Final thoughts:

This book was written by a former NFL wide receiver who actually doesn’t have any kids.  However, he does care about representation in film and books and I appreciated this story.
