Book About Love and Loss

Today I have a book about love and loss.  This story just won a Caldicott Honor so I am not the only one enchanted by the verse and the illustrations.  It is a beautiful way to introduce the idea of the cycle of life and the inevitable death of a pet.

Title: Big Cat, little catbook about love and loss big cat little cat

Author: Elisha Cooper

Target: Preschool-Grade 3

What this book is about:

Cat is living alone until one day a kitten comes along.  Cat shows kitten how things are done around the house and soon kitten grows into a bigger cat and the two become companions and playmates.  Cat gets older and one day he leaves and never comes back.  This is hard for the bigger cat until one day a new kitten comes along and must be shown the ropes and loved.

Why I love this book:

  • First off the simple drawings are so powerful.  Cooper plays with black and white to artfully illustrate the differences and similarities between the two cats over time.  The meaning is conveyed through the illustrations even if no words were present.
  • However, the words are wonderful.  Their directness and simplicity tug at our heartstrings with no manufactured tenderness.  The message of love. loss and renewal are not lost on the youngest reader who may very well lose someone or something they cherish over time.  But the book still keeps a level of playfulness that does not allow the reader to wallow.

Who this book is for:

Great for all kids.  Especially timely if a child may be experiencing loss.

Final thoughts:

I can see why this one took home a shiny sticker last month!
