Athlete vs. Mathlete

The book I am recommending today spoke to me because I have a family that has both athletes of the body and athletes of the mind!  I also appreciated the way it looked at all of the demands on kid’s time.  Finding your passion, working hard and making choices are things that all kids (and some parents) are struggling to master. This book spoke to those challenges in an honest way.

Title: Athlete vs. Mathleteathlete

Author: W. C. Mack

Target: Grades 4-6

Series: Yes

What this book is about:
Twins Owen and Russell have their own identities. Owen is the jock who loves basketball. Russell is the mathlete who does well in school and competes in Master of the Mind tournaments. When the new basketball coach sees how tall Russell is, he insists that he try out for the team.  Both brothers think it is an exercise in futility, given that Russell has little athletic ability. However, it turns out that Russell’s surprisingly strong shooting means he will be a star player. Can the brothers adjust to Russell invading Owen’s turf?

Why I love this book:

  • First off the story is told in the alternating voices of Owen and Russell. I always love books that provide multiple perspectives, because  it really benefits kids to see both sides of an issue and they develop empathy.
  • At times Owen is really struggling and his jealousy toward Russell and his anger felt very real. I also appreciated Russell’s struggle with managing his growing list of activities.

Who this book is for:
Great for kids with siblings and a nice basketball story for kids who like sports books.

Final thoughts:
The title and cover for this book are just great! I love it when they get it right.
