A Sophisticated Book of Trucks

Today I have a sophisticated book of trucks.  I know, you think of demolition excavators as lumbering vehicles, but this book might just change your mind.  Kids will love the array of construction vehicles presented while parents will appreciate the sleek illustrations that take building materials up a notch!

Title: Skyscrapersophisticated book of trucks skyscraper

Author: Jorey Hurley

Target: Preschool-Kindergarten

What this book is about:

This book will show kids how a building is constructed while making the trucks and heavy equipment the stars of the show.  From the demolition of a small brick building to the gleaming skyscraper that takes its place, kids will be treated to the array of vehicles that dig, push, dump and drill in between.

Why I love this book:

  • I always appreciate simplicity done well, and this book presents each two-page layout with the truck and the action word that defines its job.  It is so fun at the end when readers have to turn the book 90 degrees to see the full skyscraper, which is a lovely visual emphasis of its size.  I will say that as simple as the book presents itself, I did find that I read it better after several go throughs.   With the emphasis on the trucks, the development of the building does get a little lost.  I was able to understand the context of the building growth only after a few careful observations.
  • Jorey Hurley has produced some incredible visuals.  They feel very modern.  Backgrounds of grays and browns make the trucks in vibrant reds, blues and yellows pop off the page.

Who this book is for:

Great for any kid who likes construction vehicles and any parent who likes some sophisticated illustrations.  Reminiscent of books by Donald Crews.

Final thoughts:

A lovely book to add to any truck aficionado’s library.
