A Realistic, Modern and Funny Book for Kids

Well the countdown to my Friday Newbery reveal continues with a story that is a realistic, modern and funny book for kids.  This one sat on my TBR pile for way too long so don’t make the same mistake I did.  Get out there and read a book that will actually have your kids laughing out loud!

Title: The Best Manthe best man a realistic modern and funny book for kids

Author: Richard Peck

Target: Grades 4-7

Series: No

What this book is about:

Archer lives a pleasant life outside of Chicago. The story starts with a wedding where he has to be the dreaded ring bearer and he meets Lynette, a get to the point kind of gal who will turn out to be his best friend. His dapper Uncle Paul is a recurring figure as is his grandpa, the architect of their town, with whom he shares a special bond. The book spans from Archer’s time in first grade to sixth grade with a variety of teachers, challenges and discoveries along the way. Of course, story ends with a wedding where he is promoted to best man, a far better gig.

Why I love this book:

  • I usually have a real problem with stories where not much happens, but this book blew me away. It is so incredibly readable with insights and humor at every turn. Archer is so likable, innocent and witty that I was completely caught up in his world in the best possible way.
  • I really liked how the gay relationship and wedding was written for his uncle Paul. There is nothing preachy here, no great revelation. Just a side story that shows us that if you are gay your life kind of plays out with the same challenges and humor as if you aren’t.
  • I literally cried while laughing reading the second chapter in this book. One of the funniest things I have read in recent memory. It was extremely embarrassing too because I was reading the chapter in our local sandwich shop and the other patrons kept looking over at me. What can you do but shrug and laugh some more!

Who this book is for:

Great for kids who like realistic fiction and funny books. Reminds me of books like The Secret of Ferrel Savage, We are All Made of Molecules or Lost in the Sun.

Final thoughts:

Our family has spent many summers at Lake Geneva, a lake outside of Chicago, so it was really fun for me when that area was featured! I kept thinking I knew exactly where they were.
